Sonnyvilla

March 30th, 2009 by Matthew

I want to take a minute to feature another friend of myChristianConnection.  Here is a brief description of Sonnyvilla, from their blog:

We build hope for youth by encouraging emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and physical maturity through secure and consistent family-style environments.

Each home is committed to equipping youth with life essential principles for daily living, establishing healthy relationships, excelling in education, gaining social and economic empowerment, promoting spiritual growth, and engaging in hands on learning activities as a team/family unit. Everyday we gather for “family time” around the dinner table and discuss critical issues our youth are facing in the community.

We provide a nurturing, caring, and instructive atmosphere where at risk youth from urban neighborhoods participate in various enrichment activities such as life skills classes, tutoring, mentoring, and career paths. Whether it’s tutoring performing arts, technology, photography, building trades, or even youth camps; we step into the lives of our youth, keep them away from destructive behavior, and teach them to become active civic participants by embracing the community around them.

Our Houses of H.O.P.E (Homes Openly Providing Encouragement) are established to build hope for youth by providing a comfortable family-style setting. The key ingredient to maximizing our effectiveness is developing these homes within walking distance of middle schools and opening them up to youth during the “at risk” hours of 3-7 pm weekdays as well as on the weekend.

You can contact Josiah Martino, founder and CEO of Sonnyvilla, at (574) 876-3516 or e-mail him at josiah@sonnyvilla.com.  You can check out their website at sonnyvilla.com or their blog at sonnyvilla.squarespace.com.  You can also donate to their cause by joining their cause.  You can do so Here.  The impact that Sonnyvilla is having on the local community is nothing short of amazing, which comes as no surprise to those who know Josiah and see what a genuine person he is.  I am proud to call Sonnyvilla a friend of myChristianConnection.

Ads on myChristianConnection

March 27th, 2009 by Matthew

As many of you have probably noticed, we have added ads to our site, namely Google AdSense ads.  There are several reasons for this, however I would rather talk about how this effects our members.

We have anticipated adding ads onto myChristianConnection for some time, however we didn’t feel comfortable with that until just recently.  The change?  The ability for us to turn off the ads for those members who are logged in.  We recognize the strong feeling about ads on the web, however, if we are going to provide services for our members for free, we need to be able to generate income streams, especially during these trying economic times.  While we understand that members don’t want to have to consistently look at ads, we wanted to have the ability for our members to not see the ads.

Another reason for displaying ads is that it can encourage regular visitors to myChristianConnection to register with our site.  As a result they would be able to log in and avoid seeing the ads on our site.  This also benefits myChristianConnection because we are able to sell ads to companies based on the amount of members we have.

Overall, we hope that the ads on our site do not interfere, while at the same time they provide addition opportunities for everyone in our community.  As always we encourage your feedback and ask that you either make comments on the blog, in the feedback forum, or through our Contact us page.

Quick Update…

March 22nd, 2009 by Matthew

Towards the beginning of the week I said that we were going to try to release some very cool enhancements to our Community, possibly towards the end of the week.  Regretfully, we did not get that new functionality installed and it is temporarily delayed.  Mostly, this delay is due to software delays and we will not know how long it will be until the software is ready to go.  I don’t anticipate this process taking much longer however, but we really wanted to have it rolled out by the end of this past week.  Just because those new improvements haven’t been finished yet doesn’t just mean we sat on our thumbs either though.  We did some site maintenance, posted this blog (obviously), as well as some navigational improvements (that you may or may not notice), and we will continue to keep you up to date and informed as to when you can expect those improvements to take place.

I will give you a clue as to what those improvements entail though…Let’s just say that this new enhancement will keep those you love and care about, updated and ‘connect’ed even easier.

StreetKidsCare.com

March 18th, 2009 by Matthew

I want to take a moment to highlight a friend of myChristianConnection. The organization is called Street Kids Softball and is run by TJ Jorgensen. Street Kids Softball is one of the premier amateur athletic organizations in the nation, on the field they are one of the best men’s softball teams in the country, but off the field, their focus is changing lives through their charitable division, Street Kids Care.

SK Care has done plenty of volunteer and community oriented projects locally. SK Care focuses primarily on working with children with cancer, raising awareness for breast cancer research, helping to feed the homeless as well as many other causes. To read more about this amazing organization, visit www.StreetKidsSoftball.com or www.StreetKidsCare.com.

Upcoming site improvements

March 17th, 2009 by Matthew

Some exciting changes are going to be happening to myChristianConnection over the next few weeks.  I would like to go ahead and give you a sneak peak on what you might find in the very near future.

  • Community Enhancements - We have some MAJOR community news on the way shortly, as a matter of fact there is a chance you will get to see it by the end of the week!!!  We will be making our Community more…connected than ever before, I think you are going to like it!  I think this enhancement is the single biggest improvement, at least it’s what I am looking forward to the most.
  • Directory Improvements - We will be updating our Member Directory to the latest software release soon.  With it will come a ton of new features, that I personally am very excited about.  Along with the newer software release we will also be updating the look and feel of the Directory.  In the end I think you will be very excited with what you will see!
  • Forum Improvements - We will be updating our Member Forum software as well.  Not only will this make our forums more robust and powerful than ever before, but they will also be integrated better with the rest of the site.  What does that mean?  It should mean tighter integration with your Community Profile, some new features (to be reveled later), as well as some routine maintenance issues.  This is something I have been looking forward to for a long time, it should be exciting!

There are actually several other things that are in the planning stages as well, as those things materialize we will keep you informed.  In addition to the updates mentioned above, there are also several other updates that will be going on behind the scenes, these things will enhance the site, but not all of them right away.  If that sounds vague I am sorry, I don’t really know how else to put it.

So, the question comes, ‘How do all the things we are doing to the site fit in with our Road Map?’  I am glad you asked.  Going back a few posts you will remember that our 3 keys were:

  1. We will focus on community, along with community integration into our site.
  2. We will focus on building our ‘Core Purposes’, Blogging, Community (You), Insider Interviews, Member Directory, and our Member Forums.
  3. We will focus on integration, design, and YOU!

Essentially, the improvements we are planning really hit home on all three key focuses.  We are going to focus on community integrations with the Member Forums (and possibly the Member Directory as well), and new community enhancements that focus on connecting.  Everything we are focusing on and improving is currently listed as a ‘Core Purpose’.  Finally, the reason we are doing it revolves completely around you and giving the user the best possible experience.  We will try to accomplish this through new design and integration that hopefully, will make myChristianConnection easier to use.

One last thing, even with all these new improvements coming down the line, you won’t see any major changes in the next couple days, as I will be out of town.  Once these new updates have been released though, we will be sure to notify you immediately.  As always we look forward to your feedback and comments.

OSBN Radio Show…

March 8th, 2009 by Matthew

A friend of myChristianConnection is going to be airing a commercial for us on the OSBN Radio Show. OSBN stands for the Old School Baptist Network. Here is a little bit about Jeremy Sarber and his Radio Show:

The Old School Baptist Network presents “OSBN Radio” with host Elder Jeremy E. Sarber. Enjoy as we endeavor to present biblical truth as believed by the Primitive Baptists.

Jeremy is also an ordained Primitive Baptist Pastor and he is the owner of the Old School Baptist Network website.  Jeremy will be airing his radio show on a regular basis and I encourage you to listen in to what he has to say.  You can also find Jeremy on YouTube to see some of his videos.

I want to personally thank Jeremy for his generosity and willingness to air our first commercial for myChristianConnection live.  You can listen in on 3/12/2009 at 5:00 PM ET.  If you like, you can even be a caller on the show by dialing (646) 727-3856.  If your memory is getting bad (like mine) can set up a reminder by clicking here and then selecting the button that says reminder, underneath the section that says ‘upcoming episodes’.

Site Maintenance

March 4th, 2009 by Matthew

Tonight we went offline for less than five minutes as we implemented some site enhancements.  There were several bugs that we squashed, along with some new features being added.  We are also constantly trying to improve navigation and layout of the site.  This is very important to us, since our third ‘core purposes’ for the direction of myChristianConnection was “We will focus on integration, design, and YOU!”.

Our goal is to consistantly make our site the best it can be in all areas.  This includes design, function, and stability.  The latest site maintenance hit on function and stability.  As always we are eager to get your feedback so that we can evolve around you.

Updates to the site

February 28th, 2009 by Matthew

For about 15 minutes this afternoon myChristianConnection went off line to install some critical updates.  If you were effected we would like to apologize.  Once we discover some issues with our software we were on a little bit of a time crunch to get updated as soon as possible.  The fix is now complete and there should be no further issues stemming from this issue.

In the future we do plan on taking the site offline at a more convenient time for everyone, typically, site updates are saved until late at night / early morning.  I hope that the updates we have provided today make your experience better as well as prevent issues that could have arrived had the update not been done in a timely manor.  Thank you for your understanding.

New Community Features

February 28th, 2009 by Matthew

Several days ago (shortly after our last blog) we started adding new features to our site, Community features.  We have enabled a new profile system, groups, status updates, wall posts, among other features.  Everything is designed around our users being able to interact and develop relationships with the Body of Christ.  Relationships that hopefully will include business transactions (that’s the purpose of the directory).  We also intend to continue integrating additional features over time to make the user experience the best it can be.

Integrating these new community features was our number one priority for our ‘core purposes’, this puts us on track to deliver a top notch community for the Body of Christ to interact online with Christian Business Professionals.  We still have much to accomplish as far as layout and overall site design goes.  We plan on performing some site maintenance as well over the course of the next week, there are a couple things that are high or very high level importance that should soon be fixed.  In the mean time please give us feedback on the new features.
